it may have moisture in it.check the breathers on the axle housing they may be blocked.if it has moisture in it,the oil will have a white colour through it.Why is the oil in my car differential foaming?
Sounds like there is water in the oil either from a leak or condensation.
Gear oil does foam slightly, it's just due to the motion inside the gearbox/diff. If it is excessive though, you could have contaminated oil, best thing to do is to drain it, and refill it with fresh oil, and check breathers etc., If the oil is quite old then it is possible that the anti-foaming agents have broken down. I'd change the oil and see from there, knackered diffs normally let you know as they tend to make quite a racket when they are on their last.

That is normal gear lube does not contain anti foaming agents because it is a splash lube meanig there is no oil pump to pick up the oil just the gears that sling it around . Lucas Oil makes a good additive for gear lube that will help keep foaming to a minimum and help it cling to gears and bearings better.
Gear oil will foam a little naturally because of the gears turning.
Water contamination would cause the oil to look milky. If it looks milky, or brown, it needs to be changed, because it has had water in it. Make sure to use 80-90 EP, and the best brand you can find.
