My car out of no where it suddenly starts heating up to the point of steaming. can it be because of low oil?

The short answer is no - low oil would cause tapping that would progress to knocking as the oil continued to leak out and finally when there was little or no oil left the engine would seize. It will keep going down the road right up to this point. Your car has a problem in the cooling system. Check your coolant level and condition. If the coolant is full and uncontaminated, then you will have to feel the hose to make sure the system is flowing (good water pump) and the thermostat is open (allowing coolant to flow into the engine) and check the fan to make sure it is coming on. If the coolant is low, you'll have to find the leak. I could give you some common failure components if I had your vehicle type.
