Yes, that is correct! You also want to make sure that the place you've parked is a level, if possible. This will give you a more accurate reading. When do i check ,y engine and transmission oil? i heard something that the car has to be ran to check the?
Most oil dip sticks have a hot and cold marking on them. You can check them while running or turned off.

Transmission fluid dip stick does need the engine to be running and warmed up to check it
The safest answer for anyone, is you should check your fluids daily.

Motor Oil. Best to check cold, level, motor off.

Transmission. Best to check hot, level, motor on, in Park.

1 Mile of driving is enough to check transmission fluid.

Your owners manual can also specify what I just told you, except they may say that you should check these every week.

If you're on the highway every day its best to check all fluids every day.
automatic transmissions, the car needs to be running, go to drive, reverse a couple times, then neutral to check the fluid. engine oils, the car should be shut off
Engine warm and turned off for about two minutes. Transmission....depends on automatic vs manual. Manual trans is check with engine usually off (unless you are racing), and the auto trans is checked with the transmission warm(driven for about 15 minutes) and then go by the manufacturers specs, i.e. chevy--in park and idling. Go to Jiffy Lube and have them do it, or take it to a dealer and they will show you how to do it.
in older cars the engine had to be running for the transmission fluid to be checked. In newer cars that is no longer the case and actually can be dangerous because the dipstick could be close to the fan. If you are uncertain, consult your owners manual
Check the engine oil when the engine is warm and off. Check the transmission while the engine is warm and idling in park or nuetral.
It depends on the make and model.

Some cars require that the engine be running with the

transmission in park or drive.

Check your owners manual or search the Internet. '

Keeping the proper level in the transmission is extremely

important. If it gets too low you may have to buy a new transmission.
Tranny: motor running.

Oil: Motor not running.

Check each when you gas up or once a week, unless you got nasty stains under your car, then more often.
